No fewer than thirteen passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” declared the national leader.

The official confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The building of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, beating predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised significant questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a full independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
